In the beginning
This blog is my journey into M.E and how it has impacted my life, so let's start with the basics.
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a chronic and debilitating disease that affects the neurological and immune systems. It is also commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID). The exact cause of ME is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors.
Symptoms of ME can vary greatly from person to person, but some common ones include severe fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments such as difficulty with memory and concentration. The fatigue experienced by those with ME is often described as being much more severe than normal tiredness and is not relieved by rest or sleep.
Diagnosis of ME can be difficult as there is currently no specific test for it and symptoms can overlap with other conditions. It is typically diagnosed through the exclusion of other conditions and by meeting certain criteria, such as experiencing severe fatigue for at least six months and having at least four out of eight specific symptoms.
Currently, there is no cure for ME and treatment focuses on managing symptoms. This can include medications to manage pain and sleep disturbances, physical therapy to help with muscle and joint pain, and cognitive behavioural therapy to help with emotional and psychological symptoms.
It is important to note that ME is not a psychological disorder and should not be dismissed as such. The disease is real and can greatly impact the quality of life of those affected by it. There is also a need for more research to be done in order to better understand the causes of ME and to develop more effective treatments.
Living with ME can be challenging and it is important for loved ones and medical professionals to be understanding and supportive. It is also important for those with ME to take care of themselves and not push themselves too hard, as overexertion can make symptoms worse.
In conclusion, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a chronic and debilitating disease that affects the neurological and immune systems. It is characterized by severe fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments. There is currently no cure for ME and treatment focuses on managing symptoms. There is a need for more research to be done in order to better understand the causes of ME and to develop more effective treatments.
